COURSE DESCRIPTION

This intensive 4-day workshop will introduce students to how stories are developed at the major feature animation studios. There will be lectures, slides and film clips about story and storyboarding. The students will get hands-on experience in creating a concept for an animated short, and developing it, with lots of one-on-one coaching from Robert. Then on the final day, the students will pitch their finished concepts, complete with drawings to the class.

Promises to be a fun and intensive workshop, packed with lots of practical story information, and with plenty of opportunity for students to hone and show off their storytelling “chops!”

DAY ONE

Introduction and Bio.

We will chart how the studios go about choosing and developing an idea for animation.

Basics of visual communication, composition and staging. Basics of story structure.

DAY TWO

We will talk about the different types of storyboarding, from beat boards to continuity boards, with examples shown of each.

We will look at film clips that pertain to story concepts.

At the end of the night, students will select their elements for their final pitch assignments.

DAY THREE

One-on-one workshop, working with your elements, developing your concept, with plenty of feedback from Robert.

How to pitch and present your idea. Robert will share his experiences and insights in how to prepare and deliver a successful pitch.

DAY FOUR

Pitch Day! The workshop will culminate with each student standing up and pitching their film concept to the class.

PREREQUISITES

Some basic drawing skills would be a plus, but since the focus of the class is story, even simple stick figures would be okay!

Can draw digital or traditional. If digital, you’ll need to print out your final pitch.
